Getting us up the mountain efficiently and down the mountain with plenty of whoops and hollers is the Pivot Trail 429 Race X01 Mountain Bike. This 120mm fun trail bike is built for speed whether it's smooth loops around our local cross-country trail or big days up in the mountains. Pivot has completely redesigned the 429, giving the frame a vertical shock upgrade to complement its DW-link suspension linkage. The new frame design drops 300g off a size large, so we're half tempted to rip trail one day and sign up for our local cross-country race the next. Geometry on this version of the 429 is dialed for a competent trail bike that relishes the descents as much as it pushes us up the climbs. A flip-chip in the rear lets us choose between 'slack' and 'slacker', so naturally, we're going for the slacker option. In this setting, the headtube drops to 66 all while keeping a relatively steep seat tube angle of 75. Combined with a middling wheelbase of 1188mm(size M) we're having fun no matter what direction the trail goes or how long the next descent is. Helping us keep the fun between the legs and a smile on our faces is the DW-link suspension paired with supple FOX suspension. DW-linkage makes for an incredibly efficient pedaler, eliminating pedal input from affecting our suspension. The FOX Performance squish works overtime, giving us a great bit of kit for descending prowess while being light enough to not punish us on the uphills. Drivetrain duties on the Trail 429 are taken care of by SRAM, with a mix of GX Eagle and X01 Eagle giving us tons of range and quality shifts every time. Finishing kit on the Trail 429 is provided by a mix of in-house Pivot parts built with quality aluminum to keep us upright and charging hard. Wheels are provided by DT Swiss, coming in a nice and wide option to support the aggressive Maxxis rubber on offer.
