When we first threw a leg over the Trail 429, we were blown away by its ability to climb and accelerate like a cross-country race bike, then turn around and handle black diamond descents with a level of confidence that surpasses that of its longer travel competitors. Considering the bike's impressive capability, some of us found ourselves dreaming of a more aggressive build kit that could push the envelope even further, and exceed the demands of today's progressive trail riders. Pivot apparently felt the same way, which is why they've brought us the Limited Edition Trail 429 Enduro. Equipped with a 140mm travel Fox 36 fork up front, a custom-tuned DPX2 rear shock, burly carbon wheels from Reynolds, and a trusty Shimano XT/XTR drivetrain, this bike is built to hit the trails with newfound haste and conquer lines you never thought possible on a short-travel trail bike. Being that the frame is the same as the standard Trail 429, the Enduro kit retains Pivot's stretched out rear hub that boasts a whopping 157mm width--a detail we welcome with open arms on a bike of this caliber. This wide hub means a few things: first, it allows for a stiffer bracing angle when lacing up your wheel, which translates to power, responsiveness, and control when you book it into a blind corner and are met with particularly chunky sections you weren't expecting. Next, the wide hub offers extra room for loftier tires in 29er form, and better clearance if you decide to toss in a pair of 27. 5+ hoops that keep you floating through loose dust come mid-summer. Finally, the wider hub carries through to wider stays that enable the rear wheel to be tucked up closer to the seat tube, which allows Pivot to shorten the chainstays for snappy, responsive power as soon as you put your power to the pedal, along with light and nimble handling when you cook it into twisted technical trails.
