These wider rims are necessary to give proper support to the tire, which in turn allows riders to run lower pressures without drastically increasing the risk of flats. Ibis was one of the first manufacturers to offer rim widths in the mid 30-millimeter range, well before tire companies had even fully caught on. To achieve this Ibis knew they had to reduce the height of their beadwalls in order to make them less likely to bend and break. Stan's NoTubes already uses this technology in their existing rims, so Ibis collaborated with them to use their patented Bead Socket Technology (BST), which not only reduces the beadwall heights for improved vertical compliance, impact resistance, and ride quality, but also makes it easier to mount tires and provides a more secure tubeless setup.
