As the fattest offering in K2's backcountry-specific Wayback line, the Wayback 106 Ski has a penchant for those mid-winter deep days, but is accommodating enough to ski any line you point it at. The 106-millimeter waist keeps you up in powder, but is nimble enough to be stuffed into tight chutes and steep trees. A rockered tip and tail add to the ski's float and make turn initiation in deeper snow feel like a breeze, and a snow-phobic topsheet prevents snow from building up on your skis and adding weight when you get back on the skinner for another lap. While the Wayback is obviously uphill-oriented, weighing in at under 7 pounds per pair, K2 gave the line a makeover this season to dial in the perfectly blend of uphill efficiency and downhill performance. A paulownia wood core keeps the overall weight low and maintains a lively, fun feel, but the real ski-ability comes from a Titanal spine which dampens vibrations and enhances overall stability for a smoother, more predictable ride. The spine is sandwiched between two layers of fiberglass and carbon stringers to add stiffness without adding weight so you can enjoy uncompromised performance, both on the ascent and the descent.
